Diego: "Sometimes, it feels just like a video game: installing new technology in an old train and making sure it works just like you envisioned. It is simply incredible."
As an electrical engineer, you will come into contact with a wide variety of technology. Most of what you'll be doing has to do with the integration of technology in the train. The technology you'll be working with may be forty years old or (nearly) state of the art. Fully relay-controlled systems are used alongside CAN buses and PLC-operated door controls. The train has everything you need to safely move from 1,500 VDC to an outlet, USB power supply or three-phase motor. It contains mobile communication, intelligent lighting concepts, diagnostic systems and train security systems; in other words, a wide spectrum of technological solutions! The various challenging projects you'll be working on are designed to e.g. increase our passengers’ comfort and contribute to the sustainability of our trains by lowering their energy consumption.
Our trains are well maintained. Every day, our people work hard to modernise and revise them, repair damage or implement structural modifications. As an electrical engineer, you will be partly responsible for the development of the (electrotechnical) design of modifications to trains in need of modernisation. In doing so, you achieve success. Your electrotechnical expertise makes you invaluable, because you:
You report to the group leader of the Electrical Systems engineering team. Each team member is responsible for their own projects and we often get together to spar about our approaches to different cases. Examples include our approach to various design problems related to:
